Professional stainless steel
outdoor ground spotlights

There is a wide variety of outdoor spotlights. Outdoor spotlights, garden spotlights, and recessed lights are the most popular and required products on the market, but while they are lighting evergreens, they are not all the same.

Since they are installed directly in the ground, recessed spotlights must have minimum requirements to meet design and durability needs. This is why it is important to install products that are made of AISI 316L stainless steel, perfectly watertight, but with a good dissipation capacity that keeps the surface temperature of the body low and does not burn to the touch.

Installation in the ground means that there is a high level of moisture, which could occur inside the luminaire body, which is why it is important to equip the product with a high IP-rated connector that prevents moisture from rising through the power cable.

In most cases, outdoor floor spotlights have a stainless-steel ring, often in 304 stainless steel, paying no attention to the internal body recessed into the ground which, to cut costs, is made of aluminium or plastic.

In this way the spotlight over time will still present problems of corrosion or deterioration of the body, which will then also spread to the frame, especially in seafront installations with high salt levels or in the mountains where temperatures, often below zero, force the use of antifreeze salts which, even within a short time, will damage the recessed spotlights.

A stainless steel outdoor spotlight

The outdoor spotlights in the OLY range, unlike most of the spotlights on the market, are made entirely of stainless steel, which means that every component of the recessed light body, and not just the ring nut, is made of stainless steel, AISI 316L. This ensures that the luminaires can withstand extreme weather conditions for a long time and do not suffer from corrosion problems.

The 304 stainless steel itself is not sufficient to avoid the corrosion problems that this type of product undergoes due to the type of application it is subjected to.

These products must be housed in special draining casing, which allows the installation of the recessed spotlight before it is installed. The casing plays an important role as it allows the correct installation of the spotlight flush with the ground, avoiding dangerous differences in level and facilitating the correct wiring of the cables for water drainage.

Recessed spotlights for public and residential lighting

The OLY range of spotlights by STRAL are particularly suitable for public and residential contexts. In public contexts, the need is often to illuminate passages and walkways, as well as boulevards and squares, in a functional and safe way, but at the same time to have products that are resistant to vandalism and the passage of countless people and vehicles.

Especially in these cases, it is essential to use highly resistant products that do not deteriorate after a short time, forcing public administrations to replace them at unforeseen expense.

The same care is taken in residential areas, where there is certainly less risk of vandalism and the passage of people is limited, but having a façade or an architectural detail that is always perfectly lighted is just as important and necessary, especially in prestigious locations.

When to use stainless steel outdoor spotlights - project choices

Outdoor spotlights can be used to illuminate architectural details or large spaces from the bottom up.

Recessed steplights are easily applied in gardens, outdoor paving, public spaces, pathways and driveways, swimming pools and wellness areas.

Depending on the need, an appropriate light beam is used.

For example, to illuminate small columns while highlighting the architecture, we recommend the use of the 6° optic, with a narrow beam to mark the geometry of the building. Various light effects can also be achieved by placing spotlights on a material wall to highlight the texture of the material, creating suggestions, and grazing light effects.

Wall-washer optics, on the other hand, can be used for the uniform illumination of surfaces and are particularly suitable for emphasising the structure of the building by highlighting its architecture and volumes and concealing any imperfections in the walls. Wall-washer luminaires (diffuse and uniform wall lighting), in contrast to grazing lighting, are installed slightly further away from the wall - up to 1 metre - to achieve a wider angle between the light source and the surface.

The type of light beam is a choice made by the lighting designer to achieve the desired result for the customer. With more technical products such as outdoor recessed floor lights, it is not always easy to predict the quantity and quality of light needed to illuminate a given space or architectural detail. This is why it is always recommended to contact professionals.

Anti-glare filters for walkway lights

Why use anti-glare filters for walkway lights? Often the problem with recessed floor spotlights is glare. As they are placed at ground level, the light beam is annoying to the eye. Therefore, in special design situations it is necessary to shield the light sources with special filters. OLY is equipped with two anti-glare filters, a honeycomb filter, and an asymmetric filter.

The traditional hexagonal honeycomb filter screens out glare but shines the light upwards by not shielding it in a specific direction.

The asymmetrical filter with blades screens light from one side and directs it in the other. For example, when lighting a corridor, it directs the light onto the wall and screens the light on the passageway to avoid glare to passers-by.

Integrated LED or gu10 socket lamps?

OLY N-110 is available in a version with LEDs supplied as standard or in a version supplied with a GU10 lamp holder for the insertion of energy-saving LED bulbs.

The difference between these two versions lies in the design requirement and lighting performance.

The standard LED version guarantees a high performance of the spotlight at project level with a continuity of colour and light quality with the other light sources installed in the installation. It is also possible to dim the spotlight and vary the type of light with the optics and colour temperature of the led.

The version with led bulbs with gu10 socket foresees the use of a commercial bulb and is useful where there are no particular project requirements other than the power and colour temperature of the led, guaranteeing the possibility of easily replacing the light source in the event of a failure.
