Cargo Milano:
outdoor lighting between design,
nature and architecture
Within Milan’s evolving urban landscape, Cargo Milano on Via Meucci 50 stands as an outstanding example of the integration of architecture, landscape design and sustainability. More than a retail destination, the new complex has been conceived as an open space for the city: a public square, a dry garden, a restaurant and a gathering place that invites visitors and residents to experience the environment in a natural and spontaneous way.
In this context, outdoor lighting plays a fundamental role. It not only ensures safety and usability after dark, but also enhances the identity of the project, guiding visitors through a journey that connects nature, materials and architecture.
Cargo Milano was developed opposite the brand’s historic store on Via Meucci 42, expanding its presence within the Martesana district. Designed by Mauro Bacchini in collaboration with WEG Studio, the project embodies a new concept of commercial space: open, sustainable and deeply connected to its surroundings.
Alongside the retail areas, visitors can enjoy a large dry garden designed by Marianna Merisi, a shared public square and the Tanishka restaurant. Every element has been conceived to encourage people to stay, interact and experience the space beyond the act of shopping.
In a project where landscape design plays a central role, light becomes a true design tool.
The outdoor lighting scheme was developed to guide paths, highlight vegetation and define architectural geometries without altering their natural character. The objective was not to create dramatic visual effects, but rather to establish a balance between visibility, visual comfort and environmental integration.
As a result, light allows both the dry garden and the square to remain welcoming and accessible after sunset, while preserving the project's coherent architectural language and atmosphere.
For the outdoor lighting installation, STRAL’s FOCAL D50 was selected in AISI 316L stainless steel with an Inox Graphite finish.
Thanks to its compact dimensions and its ability to blend discreetly into the landscape, the luminaire highlights pathways, vegetation and architectural details without creating intrusive visual impact.
Manufactured entirely from AISI 316L stainless steel, FOCAL D50 offers excellent resistance to weathering and long-term durability—essential characteristics for outdoor applications exposed to varying environmental conditions.
The commitment to sustainability that defines Cargo Milano naturally aligns with STRAL’s design philosophy.
AISI 316L stainless steel is a durable, recyclable and highly corrosion-resistant material. Its ability to preserve both aesthetic and functional qualities over time reduces the need for replacement and maintenance, contributing to a more responsible use of resources.
The Inox Graphite finish also complements the project’s material palette, integrating harmoniously with the greenery of the garden and the contemporary architectural surfaces.
At Cargo Milano, light is not merely a technical element; it is an integral part of the project narrative.
Through the use of discreet yet high-performing luminaires such as FOCAL D50, lighting helps define the identity of the place, creating an ongoing dialogue between people, architecture, nature and urban space.
This approach reflects STRAL’s vision: designing lighting solutions that enhance landscapes and architecture through the quality of light and the enduring value of materials.
